What is a common way that staphylococci can be transmitted?

Staphylococci, a type of bacteria often found on the skin and in the nasal passages of healthy individuals, can be transmitted through contact with surfaces or objects that have been contaminated. Doorknobs serve as examples of fomites, which are inanimate objects that can harbor infectious agents. When a person touches a doorknob that has staphylococci on it, and subsequently touches their skin or mouth, the bacteria may be transferred, potentially leading to infection.

While airborne particles and coughing can transmit respiratory illnesses and some bacteria, staphylococci are typically spread through direct contact or via contaminated surfaces, making doorknobs a common route of transmission. Contaminated food is more associated with different types of bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses.
